Gmail and Google Calendar apps for Android

Our recommended solution is to download and use the Gmail and Google Calendar apps from the Google Play Store.  These These apps are free and offer more integration with Gmail than the built-in apps.   Since your Android is a Google device, chances are you already have these apps.

Step By Step Instructions (Gmail and Google Calendar apps)

Launch one of the apps from G Suite.   Setup is the same for both of them.

Add an account

Open the Gmail or Google Calendar app.

On the top left, touch the Menu icon Image Removed.

 At the top of the menu screen, go to the right of your username and touch the down arrow.

 Touch Add account.

 Choose the type of account you want to add:     Google: A Gmail or Google for Work address.

Add a New Account

Once you add a Google account to your Android device all Google apps will be able to access it.

1. Pull down the menu from the top of your screen and tap the Settings icon at the top-right.
2. Choose Accounts and Backup, then Accounts.
3. Tap Add Account.
4.  Choose the account type. For your Swarthmore account choose Google.
   1. You may be prompted to enter your device password for security.
5. At the Google sign-in page, enter your full Swarthmore email address. And tap Continue.
6. You will be brought to the Swarthmore login page. Enter your Swarthmore username and password.
7. You will be prompted to authenticate with Duo. Choose your preferred method to do so.
8. You will be asked what you want to sync with your device. Make sure Calendar and Gmail are on.

You can change the items you sync at any time by going back into the Accounts section, tapping your Swarthmore account, and then Sync Account.

Update Your Password

The next time you open any Google app on your mobile device, Google will tell you it has encountered a problem and ask you to sign back in.

1. Tap to sign in to your Google account and you will be prompted to enter an email address.
2. Type in your full Swarthmore email address and click Continue.
3. You will be brought to the usual Swarthmore login screen. Enter your Swarthmore username and password.
4. You will be prompted to authenticate with Duo. Choose your preferred method to do so.
5. If login is successful, you will be brought back to your Gmail app on your mobile device.

Switch Between Gmail Accounts

If you have more than one Gmail account, messages on the Gmail app stay separate for each account. To switch between accounts:

1. Open the Gmail app.
2. At the top left, touch the Menu icon Image Removed.
3. Next to your email address, touch the down arrow.
4. Touch -right, tap your current account image.
5. Choose the account you want to useswitch to from the list.
