About MathType
MathType is a powerful an interactive equation editor for Windows and Macintosh that lets you create mathematical notation for word processing, web pages, desktop publishing, presentations, e-learning, and for TeX, LaTeX, and MathML documents.
MathType includes ChemType, an extension for creating chemical notation.
MathType will typeset handwritten equations.
Installation Instructions
To install, download the appropriate file below, unzip, and run the installer. Use

Google Docs
Follow the instructions for installing and activating MathType for Google Docs. This process involves installing the MathType add-on for for Google Docs. Make sure to use your Swarthmore Google account.
Microsoft Office
Download MathType 7 for Desktop

As of Fall 2020, MathType 7 is not compatible with macOS 10.15 (Catalina) and a fix is not planned until 2021. A workaround is to use the Google Docs version. |

Moodle
There are buttons for MathType and ChemType in every text editor in Moodle. First click to expand the toolbar, then click on the MathType or ChemType icon to insert an equation.
Example usage
