Available Types of Devices
Smartphones
Smartphones are the easiest to use and are the recommended device for authentication. If you wish to add a smartphone to Duo, you will put in your number and specify what type of phone it is (iOS, Android, Windows, etc.). You will then be prompted to download the free Duo Mobile App and walked through the process of pairing it to your account. This will allow you to authenticate via push notifications (recommended), a phone call, single-use texted passcodes, or single-use app-generated passcodes. Push is recommended because it is considered the most secure option.
*If you do not wish to download the app (e.g. if you do not have enough space on your phone) you do not have to. However, this will limit your mobile phone to only authenticate via phone calls or texted passcodes. During setup, when you reach the screen prompting you to download the app, simply hit the “Back” button on the setup page. This will leave your mobile phone registered with Duo, but not force you to pair the app.
Tablets
You can add the Duo Mobile App to your tablet and pair it to your account in the same way you would for your mobile phone. The setup process will walk you through this as well. This will allow you to authenticate via push notifications and single-use app-generated passcodes.
NOTE: in Duo, a "Passcode" is numerical and is NOT the same as your password
Landlines
You can use any landline phone to authenticate with Duo. The next time you log in after registering the desired phone number you can choose to have Duo call you to authenticate. You will then receive an automated phone call that will tell you what button to press to approve a login and what button to press to deny it.
