  1. Launch the CrashPlan Application. It may take a few minutes to open.  

    1. Within the CrashPlan application, click Restore Files to browse, search, and download files backed up for a device.

      1. Additional options: 

      2. Include deleted files 

      3. Displays or hides deleted files. When enabled, downloaded folders include any deleted files in that folder.

      4. Show hidden files. Display or hide hidden temporary and system files. Hidden files are always included in downloaded folders, regardless of whether the setting to view them is enabled.

  • To open options for downloading selected files, click Restore Files from the Restore Files view

  3. Sets the download location for the selected files.

  4. By default, set to your device's Downloads folder.

  5. Includes options for the following locations: Downloads folder, Desktop, Original Location, and Other (for selecting a custom location).

  6. b. If the file already exists -

  7. Specifies whether you want existing files (files on your device right now) renamed or overwritten when a file matching the file name downloads to the exact location.

  8. By default, it is set to rename existing files.

  9. If set to rename existing files, the CrashPlan app adds the prefix "original1" to the existing files.

  10. c. Permissions -

  11. Specifies ownership of restored files. By default, it is set to Current.

  12. Two settings are available:

  13. Current: (Recommended) When the file is restored, its ownership is changed to match the ownership of the folder where the restored file is saved. 

  14. Original: When the file is restored, it keeps the original owner in place when backed up.

  15. d. Cancel Exits the options view and returns to the file browser.

  16. e. Add selected files to Downloads using the selected settings. If settings were modified, your changes are maintained until you exit the Restore Files.

  • Click Downloads from the CrashPlan app's upper-right corner to open Download Activity.

  2. CrashPlan will restore files to the location they were backed up from, or you can restore them to another folder by clicking the blue text under 'Restore.' If another version of the file already exists in that location, the restored file will be named original1.filename.

  3. Once you are satisfied with these options, click RestoreYou can recover files via the web by browsing https://console.us2.crashplan.com

    Log in with Swarthmore credentials using the entire email address.

    Clicking Devices from the left-hand panel lists all devices that are performing backups.

    Select one of the devices and click the Restore icon. A web restore menu will appear with options similar to the client options listed above. Files restored via the web are downloaded in a .zip format.
