Writing Associate Role

Some courses may elect to have Writing Associates from the Writing Program be a part of their Moodle courses. The use of Course Writing and Speaking Associates makes the composition process more intentional for all students in a course. Writing Associates (WAs) can meet with writers at any stage of the process and about a variety of academic genres.

If you would like to grant a WA access to your Moodle course, you can assign them the Writing Associate role. The role has similar permissions as student, but does not appear in the gradebook and can't submit to activities. Visible to teaching roles but not student roles. They cannot view grades or download papers by default.

If you would like for them to download papers from Moodle Assignments you must override their role permissions per assignment to be able to view grades. This can be set up temporarily for the time needed to download the papers, then restricted again once all papers have been downloaded before you submit grades if necessary.

To set up the permission override for Writing Associates to download papers, please follow the instructions below.

From your course page:

  1. Turn on edit mode

  2. Click the 3 dots next to the Moodle Assignment

  3. Select Edit Settings

  4. Click the More tab → Permissions

  5. Find the permission for View Grades and click on the + symbol below the list of roles.  The next screen will allow you to choose the role you’d like to grant permission to download papers. Add the Writing Associate role.

  6. WAs will now be able to view the submitted papers to the Moodle Assignment and download them.

You can always contact ITS at support@swarthmore.edu with the name of your course and questionnaire and our Moodle support staff will make the appropriate permission changes. If you'd like to make the changes yourself, the directions are below.
