About CrashPlan Backup

Swarthmore provides CrashPlan for backing up college-owned employee computers.  Installation instructions are located at the bottom of this page.

NOTE: Backups are essential because they provide a copy of critical data and files in case of unexpected events that may lead to data loss, such as hardware failure, human error, malware or ransomware attacks, natural disasters, and other unforeseen circumstances.

If you don't have a backup, losing your data can be devastating, mainly if it contains irreplaceable personal or company information.

By creating and regularly updating backups, you can ensure that your data is safe and can be restored in case of a disaster. It provides a sense of security and peace of mind knowing that even if something goes wrong, you still have a copy of your important files and data.

CrashPlan is configured to back up files in your Users' folders only. Additional folders can be added by request from support.swarthmore.edu  The initial backup may take hours or even days to complete.  Like backup recoveries, the data transfer speed to the server depends on the network speeds and the size of the data you are backing up.  An estimated time is approximately one hour per ten gigabytes of data.

Your data is backed up as it is saved and modified, not just daily or weekly. If your computer is busy, CrashPlan will adjust its operations to distinguish it from your other applications or bandwidth. The CrashPlan software runs approximately every 15 minutes after the initial backup is complete to make the adjustments listed above.

CrashPlan does not look at our files and is concerned about security and privacy; more information is available here: www.CrashPlan.com/security
