LaTeX support for WordPress

Note

This plugin requires that a user either create an account at WordPress.com, or has ITS set up the plugin using our general purpose account.

In the event that LaTeX support would be a useful feature on your WordPress site, the JetPack plugin will need to be installed. If you do not have access to add plugins to your site please send a request to support@swarthmore.edu.

Installation and Activation

  • Log into your WordPress site and navigate to the Dashboard area.

  • On the left side of the screen, click on the Plugins menu item.

  • From the Plugins screen, check to see if the Jetpack plugin is installed and activated. If the plugin is not already installed or activated:

    • Install the plugin by visiting Plugins → Add new and searching for the Jetpack – WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth plugin and clicking the Install Now button.

    • Activate the plugin by visiting Plugins, finding the list item for Jetpack, and clicking the Activate link just below the list item.

  • The page should refresh and display an overview of the plugin's functionality. Find and click the Set up Jetpack button on this page. If you do not see the overview, return to the Plugins screen and a green banner should now be visible. Click the Set up Jetpack button.

  • You will be prompted to authenticate using either a WordPress.com or Google account.

    • You should be able to use your Swarthmore College Google account to authenticate. This will likely be the easiest process.

    • Alternately, if you already have a WordPress.com account, you can use that. Otherwise, if you don't want to create a WordPress.com account, contact support@swarthmore.edu to have ITS finish the configuration.

  • You will be taken to Jetpack's Pricing page. Scroll towards the bottom and click the Start for Free button.

  • The page should refresh and a Jetpack menu item will be added to the left side menu of the Dashboard. Additionally, Jetpack may present you with a survey about your site that will help the plugin recommend configuration options, this can be safely dismissed if you just want to install LaTeX support, or completed if you'd like to to see their recommendations.

  • Click or hover over the JetPack menu item to reveal a sub menu. Choose Settings from this sub menu.

  • From the Settings page, find and click the Writing tab.

  • Scroll down to find and activate the Use the LaTeX markup language to write mathematical equations and formulas option.
