Registering for Duo

You can choose to enroll yourself in Duo today! Just click our green "Enroll In Duo Two Factor Authentication" button and start the process. When you click on the button you will be required to login using your Swarthmore credentials. Once doing so, you will see a screen congratulating you on joining Duo and letting you know that an email was sent to you with further instructions on how to register your first device. If you were not already logged into your email before the sending of your device registration email, the next time you log into your account you will have to complete the device registration process. You will need to use a laptop or desktop computer, plus have a device ready to register, in order to complete your device registration and finish your Duo enrollment.

Registering a device is very quick, but please be aware that once you begin the process of registering a device you must finish the process. If you do not finish the process, you will start getting the Duo Authorization prompt at login, but will not have a device registered to complete this verification step. There is a general list of available device types listed below, but you can view a more detailed list of devices and how they are used to authenticate here

We strongly recommend you set up at least two devices. You can find more information about how to add more devices to Duo here.

It is also highly recommended that as you are completing the registration of a device that you choose to have Duo “Ask me to choose an authentication method” (pictured below). This will make it easier for you to switch between methods and devices as needed.

Available Types of Devices

Landlines

You can use any landline phone to authenticate with Duo. The next time you login after registering the desired phone number you can choose to have Duo call you to authenticate. You will then receive an automated phone call that will tell you what button to press to approve a login and what button to press to deny it.

Smartphones

Smartphones are the easiest to use and are the recommended device for authentication. If you wish to add a smartphone to Duo, you will put in your number and specify what type of phone it is (iOS, Android, Windows, etc.). You will then be prompted to download the free Duo Mobile App and walked through the process of pairing it to your account. This will allow you to authenticate via push notifications (recommended), a phone call, single-use texted passcodes, or single-use app generated passcodes.

*If you do not wish to download the app (e.g. if you do not have enough space on your phone) you do not have to. However, this will limit your mobile phone to only authenticate via phone calls or texted passcodes. During setup, when you reach the screen prompting you to download the app, simply hit the “Back” button on the setup page. This will leave your mobile phone registered with Duo, but not force you to pair the app.

Tablets

You can add the Duo Mobile App to your tablet and pair it to your account in the same way you would for your mobile phone. The setup process will walk you through this as well. This will allow you to authenticate via push notifications and single-use app generated passcodes.
