We have enabled the Live Transcription feature in Zoom for all Swarthmore users. These captions are an AI-powered live transcription that can be enabled by the host, and any participants can view the captioning as needed. Live transcription only supports the English language right now and it is recommended that you speak clearly for best results. Important note: Zoom does not offer this feature when in a Breakout Room.
The accuracy of Zoom’s live transcription feature depends on many variables, such as but not limited to:
- Background noise
- Volume and clarity of the speaker’s voice
- Speaker's proficiency with the English language
- Lexicons and dialects specific to a geographic area or community
Because of these limitations, if you are required to use speech-to-text support for any compliance needs in your meetings and webinars, we recommend using a human captioner who may be able to guarantee specific accuracy. However, there is no harm in enabling live transcription even if there is no compliance need as many may find it helpful (e.g. working in a noisy area, needing to turn sound off).
Host must enable
To enable, the host of the meeting must
- Click Live Transcript and
- Select Enable Auto-Transcription.
Following these steps allows the system to start providing live transcription.
Participant options
When enabled by the host, the participant will see a notification above Closed Caption/Live Transcript in the meeting controls, informing you that one of these services is available.
- To enable this option for yourself, click Live Transcript, and then select Show Subtitle.
- The provided subtitles can be clicked and dragged to move their position in the meeting window.
- To adjust the caption size:
- Click the up arrow next to Start Video / Stop Video.
- Click Video Settings then Accessibility.
- Move the slider to adjust the caption size.
