Adding and Managing Devices in Duo

Enrolling Your First Device

You will be prompted to enroll a device the first time you log in with your Swarthmore account. We recommend logging into your Swarthmore email account at gmail.swarthmore.edu, to start the Duo setup process. You will need to enroll your phone and install the Duo Mobile app in order to access all Swarthmore-related resources.

On your computer, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the website gmail.swarthmore.edu

  2. Login with your Swarthmore credentials

  3. At the Duo prompt, choose to enroll your cell phone and install the Duo Mobile app

    1. For iPhone users, please ensure you have your Apple ID password available - you may need it to confirm the download of the Duo mobile app.

  4. Follow the prompts to activate the Mobile app

  5. If you set up Touch ID, make sure to add your phone as an additional device. Your phone and the mobile app are required for certain resources, like VPN.

You can follow Duo’s official step-by-step instructions on device enrollment for assistance with the process.

Make sure your browser meets the minimum requirements for the device(s) you wish to enroll by checking out Duo’s list of supported browsers.

Managing Devices

Enrolling Additional Devices

We strongly recommend that you have at least two devices registered with Duo. However, you can have as many as you feel you need - including having multiple devices of the same type.

  1. On the Duo prompt page, click Other options.

  2. Click the Manage devices option at the bottom of your device list.

  3. You will be asked to authenticate using a device you already have registered with Duo.

  4. Click the Add a device box.

  5. Choose the device type you wish to add - follow the below instructions for each type.

    1. TouchID

    2. Duo Mobile

    3. Security key

    4. Phone for Call or Text (non-smart phone)

  6. When you are done adding devices, click the Back to login link at the top-right corner of the page.

Reactivating Duo Mobile

If you received a new mobile device, you will need to reactivate the Duo Mobile app. You can easily do so if you kept the same phone number as the old device and/or if you still have the old device with you. You can also reactivate the app as a troubleshooting step if your existing device suddenly stops receiving Duo notifications.

For the full instructions please visit Duo’s official documentation on reactivating Duo Mobile.

Renaming and Removing Devices

Renaming a device can be helpful when choosing which of your registered devices you’d like to use for authentication, especially if you have multiple devices of the same type. Removing a device that has been lost or stolen is an important step to ensuring your account remains secure. You can also remove old devices you no longer have to clean up your device list and make it easier to find the device you need.

  1. On the Duo prompt page, click Other options.

  2. Click the Manage devices option at the bottom of your device list.

  3. You will be asked to authenticate using a device you already have registered with Duo.

  4. Find the device you want to rename or remove, and click Edit in the top-right corner of the box.

  5. To rename:

    1. Click the Rename link.

    2. Edit the name in the device field.

    3. Click the Rename button.

  6. To Remove:

    1. Click the Delete link.

    2. Click the Delete [device name] button to verify you want to delete that device.

  7. When you are done renaming and/or removing devices, click the Back to login link at the top-right corner of the page.
